INKJET CARTRIDGE REFILLING
Inkjet technology has improved tremendously over the years. Inkjet printers are usually 50% cheaper than laser printers when you calculate your cost per page to print. We recomend Brother inkjet printers due to the low print cost and high reliability. Most ink cartridges have electronic heads which connect to the computer. These heads use ceramic nozzles that are smaller than a human hair to shoot ink onto the paper. Newer ink cartridges have up to 1000 nozzles in a one inch square head. These nozzles must be kept free of dried ink to function properly. Also, exposing an ink cartridge to extreme temperatures or dropping the ink cartridge can damage the nozzles.
Some ink cartridges do not have heads on them. The heads are on the printer itself. The cartridge is simply an ink tank. Some manufacturers have recently incorporated technology into their newest cartridges to virtually eliminate your ability to refill and save money. Other manufacturers have pursued legal action against cartridge refillers in an effort to protect their inkjet revenue. If you have one of these manufacturers' printers, you must purchase a new cartridge when you need ink.
Steps to refill an ink cartridge
1. Electrically test the print head for damaged nozzles.
2. Flush cartridge with warm water. Most ink cartridges have sponges in them. As the ink gets used up, the sponges will dry with ink residue in them. This dried ink must be removed by flushing. This process also cleans the nozzles.
3. Remove the water and dry the sponge. All water must be removed or the new ink will be diluted. We use a centrifuge, similar to a clothes dryer on spin cycle, to spin water out of the cartridges. This removes most of the water. We then dry the cartridges in a low temperature oven.
4. Remove air and fill cartridge. You must remove air from the sponge or ink will not totally saturate the sponge. We use a specially designed vacuum chamber to remove air and simultaneously fill the cartridge with ink.
5. Test the cartridge. We weigh and test print the cartridge. We have charts to tell us what a new cartridge weighs to make sure the cartridge is completely filled with ink. We then test print the cartridge. We have printers to test 80% of the cartridges on the market.
6. The cartridges are then stored until they are sold. We do a final test print before they go into your hands. This catches any cartridges that might malfunction.
